Gun violence continue on Belize City streets

November 09, 2010

Since last Friday, there has been an increase of gun violence on Belize City streets.

Sometime after two o’clock last Friday afternoon 37-year-old Eric Lewis Savery was shot and killed while driving his vehicle at the corner of Mex Avenue and Tanoomah Street. Savery was shot to the head by a man who came out of another vehicle and let loose with a number of shots. Savery later succumbed to his injuries. In the early hours of Sunday morning another murder was recorded as the body of 17-year-old Kenroy Tyron Mejia was discovered by a friend at the corner of South Street and East Canal. Mejia was found lying on his bed with two gunshot wounds to the right temple. As we reported yesterday, Mejia was a suspect in the murder of 20-year-old Guatemalan national Carlos Sucuqui last month.

Shortly after six yesterday evening, Keon Williams Myvette, an electrician of York Street was shot and killed on Castle Street. Initial reports are that Myvette was standing leaning on a lamp post at the corner of Lancaster and Castle Street when a lone gun man riding a bicycle pulled up and fired a hail of gun shots in his direction. Reportedly a seond man, Mark Rowley, who was in the same area, sustained a gunshot wound to the back as he was trying to take cover in a nearby home. Myvette was shot three times to the head and when police visited the scene; his body was strewn over a drain. Myvette has had his share of run-ins with the law as he was recently acquitted of a murder charge in July 2010 in a retrial. He was accused of the shooting death of thirty two year old Michael “Papa” Gladden on Lovely Lane on February 28, 2007. Mark Rowley was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Gunshots rang out again last night on Levi Slusher Street. 24-year-old Keith Middleton was at home when someone called out to him. Slusher opened the door and that was when he was shot to the abdomen. Middleton was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Last month Middleton was shot in the leg while at the corner of Central American Boulevard and Faber’s Road. So far police have not made any arrest in connection with any of these shooting incidents.

Avoiding Crime in Belize City

Due to a recent increase in violent crimes, including machete choppings, shootings,
armed robberies of persons and businesses, armed bank robberies, etc., near the Embassy
and in areas that Embassy personnel frequent, the following security and safety tips are
provided. Given the demonstrated willingness of the criminal element in Belize City to
use deadly force, it is increasingly important for all employees and family members to be
“situationally aware at all times”.

For Americans living overseas, the most serious obstacle to personal safety is an
attitude of complacency or fatalism. “It can’t happen to me”, “it won’t happen
here”, and “if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen” is dangerous thinking.
Today, the most prevalent threat you face in Belize is crime. A criminal attack
against you or your family can take place at any time or any place, as can a fire or
other disaster. However, you can influence what happens to you by assuming more
responsibility for your own security.

* Before walking or driving into a
business (particularly banks, gas stations
and shopping plazas), restaurant, parking
lot, etc; perform a quick visual check to
see if anything seems out of the
ordinary. You do not want to walk into
a business or drive into a gas station
during an armed robbery. If something
seems wrong – it probably is.

* Belize City is relatively small and
neighborhoods of different qualities are
close to each other and easily transitable.
Regardless, generally speaking, the area
of Belize City south of the Belize River
should not be visited, particularly at
night or while alone, with the exception
of daytime visits to the downtown area
immediately across from the Swing
Bridge at the end of Queen Street.

* There are a number of locations near
the Embassy, particularly some local
* Should you find yourself the victim of
a robbery or other crime, only you can
decide your course of action; however,
material items can be replaced and it is
generally preferable that you comply
with a robber’s instructions. It is always
best to leave valuables and large
amounts of cash locked up in a secure
location

* Moving about in groups, staying in
well-lit areas, avoiding short-cuts,
dressing and acting conservatively, and
most importantly, being aware of what is
going on around you and avoiding risky
or volatile situations, are some of the
most common measures.

*Assailants tend to prey on people who
appear preoccupied or confused, so the
primary rule of street smarts is to stay
alert and aware of your surroundings.
shortcuts, that one should avoid at all times.
