Great Bear Rainforest receives global attention

Hundreds of Belizians and international supporters gather on an island to form an environmental message on the Barrier Reef off the coast of Belize City.

Millions of U.S.TVviewers will gain insight today into the protection of B.C.'s Great Bear Rainforest when they see an hour-long documentary, Harmony, based on the global conservation efforts of Prince Charles.

While the heir to the British throne takes viewers around the world to look at sustainability issues, the Great Bear Rainforest is his only Canadian focus.

"I've very pleased," said Valerie Langer of ForestEthics, among the conservation groups that worked with government, industry, and aboriginals to forge an agreement over sustainable development and conservation on B.C.'s central and north coast in 2006.

"It's about the need to work together with uncommon bedfellows."

Langer watched the film at a special screening Monday at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., along with dignitaries such as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Some of the best things about long term travelling (excluding the not working and sun) are the interesting people you meet and the towns that exceed your expectations, so when both things happen at the same time it's been a good day.

As soon as we boarded the old U.S. school bus bound for the Belizean border there was a different vibe in the air, it’s hard to put a finger on exactly what had changed but it’s a bit like the difference between your friendly local pub where everyone knows your name and your drink and the new uber-cool bar where the snooty barman just appears to be out to fill the till with your money. We just instinctively liked Belize and the clapboard, slightly run down yet colourfully painted town of Corozal.

Drug Plane

National Security is steadily becoming a major concern due to recent illicit activities involving airplanes in northern, central and southern Belize. The plane that landed over the weekend in the south had a cocaine cargo estimated at one hundred and forty million dollars.  But there are other incidents involving planes.  As you are well aware on September eighteenth, nineteenth and October third, three flights originating from Haiti jointly brought in thirty-four Chinese Nationals in the cover of darkness after the P.G.I.A. was closed. A month ago on October thirteenth, an Anti-Drug Unit staged an operation in Sarteneja Village in Corozal where another suspected PAISA drug plane landed and unloaded cocaine that was picked up by a waiting truck before the anti-drug unit could get there. Five persons were later arrested in Chunox Village, about twenty miles away from Sarteneja.

A Record Bust

2604 kilos of cocaine, that's 5704 pounds - the largest drug bust in Belizean history is tonight being moved to a secure location after being weighed at the Punta Gorda Police station.

The weight was confirmed to us this afternoon by Police and Public Safety Minister Doug Singh who told us via telephone that the cocaine with an estimated street value of 46 million US dollars will be destroyed as soon as possible.

Demonstrators spotlight the end of coral reefs in Belize

Hundreds of international supporters gather to form a human banner asking if the end is near for the Belize and other endangered coral reefs around the world, on an island on the Belizian Barrier Reef off the coast of Belize City, Belize, on November 13, 2010. 


The action was on the final day of the three-day Belize Reef Summit which urged global leaders to take strong action at the upcoming U.N Climate Talks in Cancun, Mexico.
